The challenge

Mensart sells premium menswear and was competing against stores running the same handful of Shopify themes. A shared theme means a shared ceiling — no matter how strong the photography or the copywriting, the checkout flow, page transitions, and layout options stay capped at whatever the theme's settings panel allows, and any competitor on that same theme can match the look in an afternoon. The brand needed a storefront that couldn't be mistaken for a template, and full ownership of the code instead of a recurring platform fee.

The template ceiling

Mensart’s old site ran on Shopify’s Dawn theme — the same theme running on thousands of other stores, menswear included. It sold product well enough, but it capped everything that makes a premium brand read as premium: no true scroll-triggered storytelling past what the theme’s app blocks supported, no checkout customization beyond the settings panel, and a monthly platform fee that never went away no matter how much custom work got layered on top of it.

What we rebuilt from scratch

  • Editorial homepage — hero video, GSAP scroll-triggered product reveals, and gradient overlays that respond to hover instead of sitting static
  • Product pages with magnified imagery, fabric-detail callouts, size guides, and cross-sell modules built to the brand’s own layout logic, not a theme’s block library
  • Cart and checkout built in-house with a glassmorphism treatment and a dark-mode option, supporting every local payment method the brand needed at checkout
  • Admin panel for the in-house team to manage inventory, promotions, and content blocks directly — no code, no waiting on an app-store support ticket

Owning the code, not renting a theme

The Shopify version cost a recurring platform fee whether or not the brand shipped a single change that month, and every feature past the theme’s defaults meant installing a third-party app and hoping it didn’t slow the store down. The Laravel rebuild is owned outright: no monthly fee to keep the storefront running, no app-marketplace plugin needed to add a feature the theme never anticipated, and no ceiling on how far the design can diverge from every other store running the same template.

Outcome

Average session time rose 2.1x in the first month after launch, and engagement on product pages climbed with it. We hold off on claiming an SEO result until a site has six months of ranking data behind it — this one hadn’t hit that mark yet at time of writing, but the on-site engagement numbers moved immediately.
